Why Community Is Good for Your Wellbeing

We often think of wellbeing as something personal: sleep, exercise, a little time to ourselves. All of those matter. But one of the most important parts of feeling well is something we cannot do alone: being connected to other people.

Belonging

Feeling that you belong, that there are people who know your name, notice when you are missing and are glad to see you, brings a quiet kind of security. It reminds us that we are not facing life's challenges on our own.

Shared purpose

Working with others towards something bigger than ourselves, whether a local project, a cause or simply a shared hobby, gives our days meaning. Shared goals turn strangers into friends and give us a reason to keep showing up.

Giving back

Helping others is not only good for the people we help. Many people find that volunteering, supporting a neighbour or giving to a cause they care about leaves them feeling more hopeful and more connected. Kindness tends to travel in both directions.

Simple ways to build connection

  • Say hello to a neighbour, and take a moment to really listen.
  • Join a class, a group or a club built around something you enjoy.
  • Give an hour a week to a cause you believe in.
  • Check in on someone who might be on their own.
  • Share a meal; it is one of the oldest ways of bringing people together.

Start where you are

Community does not have to be big to make a difference. A few good relationships and a sense of being part of something can change how we feel about our lives.
